Ce vilain animal a tête d´antiquaire,
Lui dit: Pourquoi, monsieur, ne fait-il pas compter
Sur une pyramide? Alors sans hésiter
Oedipe repondit: C´est qu´elles sont près
Caire.
Pour un vieux calembourg on peut s´en contenter.
Translation: OEDIPUS AT THE SPHINX.
This animal villain has the head of an antiquity
He said: Sir, why is it not necessary to count
on one pyramide? Then without hesitating , Oedipus exclaimed:
It si that they are near Cairo!
For an old pun, what should be pleased.
(There is a pun in this text: près Caire meaning "near
Cairo", but précaire (pronounced the same way
as près Caire) meaning "critical".)
