Translation: Very humble, obedient, submissive, and most
of all, very voracious subjects.
Background:
This print shows the submissiveness of the political opportunists
and their interdependence with the system. In the foreground of
the picture, one can identify Dupin, Kératry, Lobau, and
Thiers connected to the throne by very thin threads. The dependence
between the House of Orléans and the Bourgeoisie is beautifully
demonstrated by Daumier. Also note the fat imprint of the word "Sujet
" (subjects). It was Montalivet who proposed this word to Parliament
to replace the word "citoyen" (citizen). It shows how
far the ruling class had moved away from the people which had elected
them.
